In a short blurb? We talk books.

Book to Film // The DUFF

I know, I know, there are no actual plans to turn Kody Keplinger’s YA novel, The DUFF into a movie. But boy-oh-boy, after reading it, I wanted to give a copy to every one of my girlfriends, and I imagined the day we could all go to the theater to laugh and cry with Bianca Piper, the novel’s main character. I hadn’t thought about it much after that until I tuned in to an episode of ABC’s new series Switched at Birth, starring Vanessa Marano, perhaps best known (at least in my circles) as the girl who played Luke’s daughter in Gilmore Girls (c’mon… you know you loved that show too). A few moments into the show I realized, this girl would make a great Bianca. She’s so great at playing the perfectly sarcastic, absolutely rebellious, totally insecure, yet beautifully bad-ass character, which is Bianca, in a nutshell. So producers out there looking for a great new chick flick, The DUFF story + Vanessa Marano would be an absolute hit.

Have you read the book? Who would you cast in the movie?

Words We Like

“I think it makes more sense to write what you don’t know. To write what makes you uneasy, what you wonder about, what keeps you awake at night."

— Lois Lowry, at the BEA Children’s Book and Author Breakfast
